Early Happy Birthday, Jin A!

Our latest Birthday Book Club recipient is Jin A, who donated the book Malcolm at Midnight, by W.H. Beck. Although her birthday is not until the end of the month, we didn’t want to make her wait any longer so that she has plenty of time to read the book before checkout is finished for the year.

Malcolm is a pet rat at McKenna School. He loves being the classroom pet and he has an active after-school social life with all the other classroom pets. One day, a pet iguana disappears and it’s up to Malcolm to find out what happened.

As the Birthday Book Club recipient, Jin A is the first one to check the book. A nameplate on the title page commemorates the occasion. Parents can enroll their students in the Birthday Book Club program, for a small fee of 150RMB, via the sidebar widget. We will be closing registration for this year at the end of the week, but parents can still register students for next school year.

Jin A's Birthday Book Club donation

Thanks, Jin A. I hope you enjoy the book. Have a great birthday next week! I hope you spend the day reading.

Thanks and Happy Birthday!

Thank you to Sidney and Saige who together donated the book Hugless Howard, by David Melling. This is the story of Howard, who was looking for someone to hug. He tried hugging everything but in the end, there’s nothing quite like hugging a loving parent.

We were delighted to receive this donation from Sidney and Saige, who have been avid users of the IST library during their life at IST. I don’t think they’ve ever missed a lunch recess since they were in kindergarten. Their favorite thing to do was color in Disney princess coloring sheets at the library tables. We will miss their cheerful presence during the elementary lunch hour!

Double Happy Birthday!

We are delighted to have a double Birthday Book Club week this week. Two of our delightful Library Club second graders are celebrating their birthdays this week and sharing the joy with the library. Although the G1-2 Library Club activity is over, these two second grade students continue to love the library.

Ju Bin's Birthday Book Club Ju Bin donated The Firekeeper’s Son, by Linda Sue Park, a well-known Korean American author. In this beautifully illustrated book, Park tells the story of a Korean boy in the 1880s whose father is a firekeeper for the Korean signal fire system. Sang Hee longs to see real soldiers, but to see them would mean not lighting the signal fire when the task falls to him and bringing down the wrath of the king on his village. This book is a perfect book for grade 2 because it is based on the extremely efficient Korean signal fire system, which fits with their unit on communication, and is told much like a folk tale, which fits in with their current unit on folk tales.
ZhiRong's Birthday Book Club

Zhi-Rong donated the book Penny and her Song, by Kevin Henkes. Mr. Henkes writes books that are perfect for young readers, with believable situations and relatable characters. You may remember Lily’s Big Day, which was  the first Panda Book Award winner for Younger Readers, way back in 2009. In Penny and her Song, Penny wrote a song and she’s just dying to sing it for her parents, but she must wait until her baby siblings wake up. Ooooh, it’s so hard to wait! The same could be said about Zhi-Rong, who saw another book in this beginning chapter book series in October and knew she wanted more of the same for her birthday.

Thanks to both girls for their superb donations. We are sure they will be frequently checked out.

Parents are invited to sign up their children for the IST Library Birthday Book Club by registering online. The form asks for name, date of birth, and reading interests. The more you can tell us about your child/ren, the better selection we can make.
